Las Vegas Trip

Paris-Las Vegas

Part 2 of yesterdays post, the morning after my Thai class I got up super early for our morning flight to Las Vegas through Vancouver. The first part of the flight to Vancouver was good cause we had the WestJet personal TV. It’s pretty cool that they provide for free everyone with their own little TV to watch instead of sticking everyone with whatever crappy movie they decide to show. We had a short layover in Vancouver which gave us all time to grab something to eat before boarding the flight to Sin City.

When we arrived in Vegas it was a little windy but with the desert sun out strong it was actually quite warm. After getting everyone’s bags together we hopped some cabs to our hotel Imperial Palace (which by the way is pretty much a dive as far as stirp hotels go, but it does have a good location and it’s cheap). After dropping off the bags Trev and I went and had some lunch at one of the infamous vegas Buffet’s, then we walked arround the strip for a while and checked out Harrahs, The Venetian, and Treasure Island. Everyon (all 12 of us) spent the first evening gambling, I played Blackjack and Texas Hold’em ending up $20 at the end of the night. The next day after sleeping in a bit, we spent the day walking around ending up drinking on the patio at Paris (which has the replica of the Eiffel Tour pictured above) people watching. After sitting for a while me and T took the long trek to the Rio to buy tickets for Penn & Teller. For the rest of the afternoon we walked around the mall at Ceasers (which is approximately the size of Market Mall if you take out the Bay, Toys R Us, and Zellers). In the evening the whole group went to a steak house at the Venetian for dinner. The Penn and Teller show after dinner was really cool, if you’re even in Vegas I suggest going to see it. Saturday was another day of walking around, I gambled some more and lost 80 bucks for a net total of being down 60. By Sunday we were all pretty much sick of the whole Vegas experience, but I did have a chance to toss 20 bucks in a slot machine and win back my 60 bucks I went down the night before.

I didn’t really take all that many pictures since I was more concerned with having a good time. Plus being a bit drunk most of the time I didn’t really want to be carying my expensive camera around where I may forget it. But the rest of my posted Vegas pictures are in this set.

Well it’s been quite some time (wow 17 days) since I last posted and quite a bit has happened. The new job is still going amazingly well, I’m having a great time with the work and the people are all really cool. That’s not saying I don’t miss the people I used to work with cause I do but I’m completely convinced that it was the right decision for me to make.

Thai Dishes

On Wednesday (the 15th) Deanne and I took the trek to SAIT Polytechnic for a night of Thai cooking instruction. As usual I arrived incredibly early so I had about 45 minutes to chat with the instructor and his helper while they were setting up. The teacher was really good, the night was full of laughs and really good food, the image I’ve attached is a sampling of the dishes that we made. Right in the center is Thai Chicken Sate with Spicy Peanut Sauce, which Deanne’s group made. In the bottom right hand corner is the Pad Thai (from scratch including the sauce) that the group I was in made, and in the back is a Thai Beef Salad. I don’t have a picture of the other 2 things that were made but they were Chicken Soup with Coconut Milk & Bananas in Coconut Cream. I don’t have all the recipes posted yet, once I do they’ll be available here.

I’m totally hooked on the classes at SAIT and I want to take a few more of them:

  • BAKE-139 — Introduction to Chocolate Making
  • BAKE-147 — Let’s Make Some Dough I
  • COOK-156 — I Love Italian

Anyone who’s interested in taking any of them with me just give me a shout, I think the next one that I’ll be doing is the Italian course. Cause I found out the same instructor who did the Thai class is doing that one, and he was really good.

Ok I’ll make a post about my vegas trip tomorrow cause this one has taken me quite long enough.

Roughnecks and superbowl tomorrow everyone have fun.

Saw this story posted on digg this morning.

You must go watch this movie of a dude playing the super mario bros theme on an 11 string bass guitar.

There was some talk last week that I might get transferred to working on another product the company makes. I’m not super keen on that but even if it happens, it sounds like now that I would still have the chance to work on .Net over there which would make it fine by me.

On the photography front I haven’t been taking nearly as many pictures as I would like to be. I carry my camera with me all the time but I don’t seem to pull it out of the bag very often. I did tonight when I was leaving the crowchild arena I looked west and saw the setting sun lighting up the clouds. So I grabbed the light painter and snapped this picture, I like the light texture on the clouds at the top alot.

This weekend is sure to be pretty busy, tomorrow is Wes’ birthday celebrations at Bottlescrew Bills then Duckey’s. Saturday I hope to finish building my optical trigger for smashenings, get started on building a rig to allow me to shoot water drop sculptures like these, hopefully take some other pictures, and maybe get some relaxing in as well. Sunday is the Roughnecks game in the early afternoon and then the Superbowl in the later afternoon/evening at Harry’s Pub in crowfoot for the best wings in the city and my 1 in 17 chance at winning a vending machine (that I promptly plan to sell to the highest bidder).

That’s about it, if my plans for saturday come to fruition and I managed to take any pictures that don’t suck I’ll probably post them.
