New Job Week One

2006/01/21 08:46:34

The first week of my new job has gone really good. I’ve been enjoying the work a whole lot, learning the ins and outs of the new code. I’m starting to understand the ASP.Net mode of working with web applications.
Taking the train downtown has been fairly good, the times I’ve been going down the train is fairly empty so it’s not too packed. I’ll have to see how I feel about it in a few months, but as far as I can tell right now I’m quite fine with taking it.

Last night was the Roughnecks second game of the season and it was totally pathetic. They got smacked by the expansion Minnesota Swarm, they played so bad it was really sad. Hopefully tonight in Edmonton we do a better job and lay the smack on the Rush.

Tonight is the second edition of The Smashening at Jeff’s house. Hopefully the pictures from this one turn out as cool as from number 1.

Friday night was the Roughnecks Home and Season Opener for the 2006 NLL season. The game wasn’t real great, we were playing the new Edmonton expansion team. We should have blown them away, but it ended up being a pretty close game. The final score was 11-9 for us so the result was a good start for the season. I brought my camera, long lense and monopod with me to the game (suprisingly enough I didn’t get hassled at all with my huge camera bag). I took about 90 pictures across the whole game and posted 58 of the ones that turned out the best. They’re all a little noisy at full size since they were all shot at 1600 ISO to get the chance at making them be decently sharp at 200-300mm with the available light in the saddledome.

Saturday in the morning I made a 50% whole wheat and honey bread, Imanaged to burn my finger in the process. The bread turned out really good though, I need to make bread more often. In the afternoon I went to see King Kong with Deanna & Keira. The movie is insanely long 3 hours and 10 minutes, which I wasn’t really prepared for. I really need to get myself in a mental place to handle a movie that long and yesterday I just wasn’t really ready for it. It was not too bad, the dinosaurs in the movie were a bit over the top, it’s not really Peter Jacksons fault I suppose since they were in the original, but personally I would have reduced the dino’s down to a small enough part to honor the original without making it silly. In the evening I went for dinner with the Mike, Ange, Colin, & Kristy at Brewsters then played a first person shooter board game called Frag. It was neat and hopefully I’ll have a chance to try it again soon.

Today is just a relaxing at home day, and preparing for my last day at the current job. Then to prepare for my first day at the new job that has me exicted and nervous all at the same time.

White Hyacinth

Well since I took the time tonight to pull some images of the CF card, I might as well post one. This is a image of some White Hyacinth’s my Mom grew out from bulbs Hydroponically. I kind of like the fact that since it was taken with the flash the whole background is dark. Makes a huge emphasis on the flowers.

The last few days at the current job are going pretty good. It’s a bit hard to concentrate but since need to get all my stuff passed off to someone else I’m trying to be as diligent as I can.

Mike’s Update 2006 V0.1

Wow as Wes so kindly pointed out it’s been quite some time since I updated my site. So a quick update here on the status of things, until I have some new photography related things to post.

As most of you probably already know over the holidays I was offered a new job at Colin’s company, much to the dismay of people at my current job I accepted this position. Hopefully it turns out to be a good decision, I think it’s a good move for me as I’ve been at this place for 3.5 years. And as such I’m starting to get a little bored there, so I’ll give the new place a try for a year or two. If it turns out I don’t enjoy it I’m sure Telvent will take me back.

As for other major happenings there hasn’t really been alot, I have been looking for a new car right now I’m looking at the Pontiac Vibe,Toyota Matrix, or VW Golf. I test drove a Vibe a few weeks ago and really enjoyed the ride, so right now I’m tilting the Matrix/Vibe direction. But who knows, when I actually go to do the purchase in a couple months that might change.

I’ve also gotten started with the very beginning of my planning for my summer vacation. The plan is just starting to coelase, but right now the general idea is to spend 2 weeks driving through the US to places to take pictures. Hitting some of the major spots:

  • Waterton
  • Yellowstone
  • Grand Canyon
  • Sequoia Park
  • Plus the Pacific Coast Highway and anything else that strikes my fancy along the way. I think it’ll be a super relaxing trip, and a nice chance to just spend some time taking pictures and hanging out.

I’ve also been considering alot more seriously the pros and cons of getting a dog. Having the companionship at home would be nice, plus dogs are just plain cool.

Well I’m thinking that’s enough of an update for one night. Hopefully I’ll have some photography stuff to post in the next little while. The roughnecks season opener is Friday night so I may take my camera to that to see if I can get some cool sports action shots.
