Vacation Goodness
2005/12/20 18:06:46So the first couple days of my Christmas vacation, have been really good.
Yesterday I completed the last of my christmas shopping, except for a couple stocking stuffers that I have left to get sometime this week. In the evening I went to The Jubilee to see The Barenaked Ladies, Barenaked for the Holidays tour with Erika. It was amazingly good, I’ve seen BNL live a couple times now and I highly suggest that anyone who’s a fan of their music take the time to see a live show. They seem to really enjoy doing the shows and have alot of energy on stage and that energy transfers to the crowd.
Today I headed downtown for a fourth interview with a company, it went well I think but was quite short at only 30 minutes. The train ride downtown was enjoyable though cause I happened to meet up with Deb so I didn’t have to sit silently on the way down there. The rest of the day I did some sidework and relaxed. Tomorrow should be a similar day of relaxing at least until the evening when I’m venturing to Chinook to see Aeon Flux.

Moon 1

Last night Jeff,Wes and I headed out to Nose Hill Park after the sun went down to capture some shots of the full moon. It’s really amazing how bright the moon is when it’s completely full. I took about 20 shots but I only edited and uploaded the best 4. I like the star trails ones with the trees in the foreground just as a point of reference in the image. The moon ones are neat as well since you can actually see quite a bit of the moons surface details.
Today at work was pretty good, the whole team went out to Moxies for a christmas lunch which was pretty decent. And at 3:00 I was officially on my christmas vacation and I don’t have to go back to the office till the 3 of Jan. I don’t really have much planned for my vacation besides some relaxing and hanging out with friends. After work I had a interview with a consulting company that went pretty decent (at least I thought it did). We’ll see if anything comes from it but it never hurts to keep thy interview skill sharp.
Tomorrow is the Friends christmas dinner V0.02, which should be tonnes of fun even though a bunch of people from the group are unable to make it. Hopefully I should have some shots from the dinner posted tomorrow after the dinner.

Weekend Update With Me

Wes Portrait
Originally uploaded by msroest.
This weekend turned out really good, Friday was pretty good. On my way home from work I stopped at The Calgary Farmers Market to pickup a Christmas present for my brother. When I got home I made a couple batches of cookies, one chocolate chip and the other oatmeal raison. I was going to also make date squares but my baking raw materials ran out. The rest of the evening was taken up watching poker and reading.
On Saturday I met Wes for breakfast, after the meal we headed over to Bowness park to take some potraits. We ended up taking about 70 shots, I’ve attached one to this post which I think turned out the best. Hopefully he should be able to find enought decent shots in the mix to get the xmas pictures he was looking for. After the shooting, I met up with Deanna, Jessa, Colin & Kristy and we went to see Chronicles of Narnia. It was really quite good, mirrored the books fairly truly (less deviation then the Harry Potter movies) and was an overall enjoyable experience. After the movie I ran some errands and headed home for some R & R time. LAter in the evening I went over to Colin & Kristy’s and watched some Scrubs and the third period & OT of the flames game.
Today was more errand running then dinner at the parents. (IE nice and sedate)
This week is my last of work before 2 weeks off for Christmas so I’m guessing it’s going to be hard to concentrate, but I’m sure I’ll make it through. Hope everyone has a good week.

Jeebs on a Shoulder
Originally uploaded by msroest.
Little late on this update, Saturday night I went to Jason’s place to watch the Flames game. We won which was awesome, Brad then brought out Jeebs and Ray. This picture was one I grabbed with the 300mm lense at ISO 100. It turned out really cool you can see some amazing detail in Jeebs head but the DOF made the background pretty blurred which I think made it turn out really cool. After the game was over we headed to the basement and played some pool and darts, and had some drinks. After the games Courtney decided that she wanted to go for Karaoke. We all relented and headed out to a bar that I can’t seem to remember the name of. Courtney the devious minx she is filled out many slips for songs, and we all thought she was really into the Karaoke. How wrong we were, she decided to sign everyone up for something. So at the end of the night I actually ended up on stage with Brad,Jason, and Ian singing Little Bones by The Tragically Hip. By that point of the night however my voice was basically gone by trying to have shout conversations over the music, so I imagine no one in the bar appreciated our presentation. The pictures from Saturday night are posted here.
Sunday afternoon was the CPS Christmas brunch at the Calgary Winter Club with Jeff & Anji, Wes. They had a really good brunch spread and I thing pretty much everyone ate too much. After the meal they gave out prizes to the members who had the highest scores on their prints over the course of the year. I didn’t win anything but that just gives me a motivation to try to bring a print every month in 2006.
Monday and Tuesday were normal boringish days at work, besides Monday night football at Harry’s not alot happened.
Wednesday night however was the CPS meeting for December. I brought this image for judging in the Open category. I got a 7.6 which is not bad and since I was the only Novice Open I won by Default (Woo hoo! Default: the two sweetest words in the English language…). I also brought this one,and this one as exhibition only pictures to show off the results of the smashening. They went over fairly well at the meeting, so we’ll definetly have to do more of these types of pics.
That pretty much brings us upto today which again not alot happened besides working. Tomorrow is Friday which means I have but one week of work left before going on my Christmas holidays, which I can’t wait for.
The weekend is looking pretty busy so far, meeting Deanna and a bunch of other people for The Chronicles of Narnia and then probably meeting Wes to do some portraiture, so he has something to make in to xmas cards/photos.

Apparently They Were Good
2005/12/1 20:37:50So I was browsing Slashdot this afternoon, and I cam accross this geek gift guide. As I was scrolling near the bottom of the page I see this picture taken by Mika during the smashening v01. So apparently the pictures we took were good enough to be used as examples of cool high speed photography. Of course Mika’s a little irked that they took his photo without giving any credit (plus they’re using it to hawk there $100 trigger kit, when we used a much cheaper $20 self assembly kit).
On the weekly news front this week has been pretty decent, on Monday we finally flipped the switch to go live on the project that I’ve pretty much been working on since I started. It’s a nice feeling to finally get it almost finished, another week or so effort and it should be finally out the door. That evening was monday night football at Harry’s, with the boys to get another stamp on the super bowl card.
Wednesday night, Chantelle, Mari, Ben and I went to see the IMAX version of the latest Harry Potter movie. It was pretty good, I’d seen it already in Houston but it was kinda cool to see it on the huge IMAX screen, plus it was good to see Chantelle and Mari again as it’d been a while. I have a small complaint about the Harry Potter movie series, I really enjoyed all the books but the movies as they’ve gone on have gotten kind of annoying. Now the books are really long, so I realize they have to cut the movies down to something a bit more managable but it still bugs me that they cut out plot elements. I’m not sure what they could do about it, maybe make the movies longer which might be a tough sell given that the latest outing is 2 hours and 15 mins long and they’re trying to market the movies to be good for kids, and I’m thinking 2:15 might already be pushing it for most minature humans.
